Dissertation citations play a key role in students’ university dissertation because this is a key part where students tell the readers from which sources they have drawn their information, which books they have consulted, who were the authors, when were the books published and which edition was it so that the teachers can get to know if the students have done an authentic job on these dissertations. It is only when these students write suitable dissertation citations for university dissertations that teachers award them good grades in class.

Students need to understand that citations are placed during the discussion part of the paper and must mention the name of the author and the date when the book or journal was published. In addition to this, students can also integrate the citation in the sentence by means of narrative; the purpose remains the same in both these cases as the students want to make it clear to the teachers that they have used proper resources in writing the papers.

There are many ways of citations depending on the type of paper that is being written; there is MLA style, there is APA style and there is also Chicago style and it is up to the students to know which citation style they must use as recommended by the teacher.

When it comes to dissertation citation in APA format, it is important that students follow the author-date method of in-text citation. In this case, the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source will appear in the text and a complete reference would be mentioned in the list at the end of the paper.

In the same way, when it comes to MLA format, the author name(s), other contributors such as translators or editors, the book’s title, editions of the book, the publication date, the publisher, and the page number would be mentioned.

When using Chicago citation style, it is recommended that students put in the author’s surname and the title after a comma, right after the quote or reference to the source in the paper. The rest should follow in the reference list where the students are required to put in the author’s surname, author forename, title as well as level, institute name and the year the book or journal was published.

Using the most suitable dissertation citation is up to the students as well as the teachers and students should check out with their teachers regarding the preferred style of citations. They must understand the dissertation citation style recommended by the teacher and stick to it as not following their instructions can land them in trouble and they will not be able to secure good grades in class if things are not done the right way.
